Movement · Cal. M1 · demo datasheet
A calibre you can read.
Cal. M1 is the automatic drawn for the Forty: twenty-four jewels, four beats a second, fifty-two hours of reserve, wound by a tungsten rotor you can watch through the back. Torvel is a fictional brand, so every figure on this page is a demo figure, marked as one.
The drawing
Taken apart, in order.
The crown, the crystal and the case; then the plate, the gilt train, two bridges, the balance and the rotor; then the back. The same order the story opens it in.

Finishing
What the light is for.
Four techniques the calibre carries and the story lights, chapter by chapter, each at macro distance.

Main plate · chapter 07
Perlage
Overlapping circles cut into the main plate with a spinning abrasive peg, one at a time. It catches light from every angle and hides under the bridges.

Bridges · chapter 04
Geneva stripes
Parallel bands ground across the bridges, each a shallow arc. Under one light only a few bands are lit; turn the watch and the light walks across them.

Bridges · chapter 04
Anglage
The bevel between a bridge's flat top and its flank, polished to a mirror, with a second facet on every edge so each outline reads as a line of light.

Bridges · chapter 04
Blued screws
Steel screws heated until the surface oxide turns a deep blue, then slotted. Set in polished sinks, they mark the bridges like punctuation.
Reserve
Whole again. Forty of them.
The case closes on the calibre and the watch turns back to you. A deposit holds one of the forty; the balance is due when yours is regulated and cased. Demo figures, demo checkout.
